Reset: Alberta Whittle

Reset

Jupiter Artland is delighted announce the details of our upcoming exhibition of the work of Turner-Prize co-winning artist Alberta Whittle. Alberta Whittle, who will represent Scotland at next year’s Venice Biennale, produced RESET at the height of lockdown, filming across Scotland (at Jupiter Artland and her home-town Glasgow), South Africa and Barbados and responding to the immediate context of the Black Lives Matter movement, the global pandemic and climate emergency.

The film skilfully connects emergent fears of contagion, moral panic and xenophobia with a call to action – a demand – to face and heal injustices and cultivate hope in hostile environments. RESET was co-commissioned and co-produced by Frieze and Forma. Whittle weaves RESET together through contributions by writers, performers, fellow artists and musicians: Sekai Machache, Mele Broomes, Matthew Arthur Williams, Christian Noelle Charles, Ama Josephine Budge, Yves B Golden, Anushka Naanyakkara, Sabrina Henry, Richy Carey and Basharat Khan, who she refers to as her accomplices. Whittle’s RESET will be accompanied by a group exhibition in which each of these artists will present their own artistic practices across Jupiter Artland’s outdoor and indoor gallery spaces. This exhibition will showcase a new generation of Scottish artists creating socially active artwork in the wake of the pandemic and culminate in a performance by Whittle and her collaborators later in the summer. Both exhibitions will be a part of Edinburgh Art Festival 2021. RESET was co-commissioned and co-produced by Frieze and Forma.
